Coronavirus death toll hits 1,016

Death toll from the novel coronavirus outbreak in China hit 1,016 on Tuesday, according to figures released by the country’s health authorities. Face of Churchillchoken first edition More than 100 people died due to the virus on Monday, a sharp spike that exceeded the 97 deaths recorded the day before. China’s National Health Commission reported that 103 of the 108 new deaths occurred in the central province of Hubei where the outbreak first began. In the provincial capital Wuhan, the epicentre of the crisis, the mortality rate stands at over four percent, official statistics reported. According to NAN, within the same 24-hour period, 2,478 new infections were confirmed nationwide, bringing the total tally up to 37,626. In Hubei province alone the number of confirmed cases is said to have reached over 30,000.

Kogi Gov suspends VC, Rector

Vice Chancellor of the Kogi State University, Prof Abdulkadir and the Rector of the state’s polytechnic, Prof Atureta have been suspended from office. Our correspondent gathered that the duo were suspended for non compliance to the new financial guidelines as directed by Governor Yahaya Bello. Sources informed that the governor was terribly miffed by the behaviour of the two top officials and directed that they should proceed on suspension. A source revealed that the Governor refused to be placated, insisting that their actions amounted to insubordination. Family identifies late Chima’s body amid tears

There were tears and cries at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) mortuary, on Monday when members of family of the late Chima Ikwunado’s identified the body of their son. Enefaa Georgewill, Chairman Civil Societies Organisation in Rivers State who was among the team that identified the late Chima’s corpse spoke to a Port Harcourt based Radio station saying that the family and Civil Society Organisations were wondering why there should be any need for autopsy as, according to him, there were marks on the deceased’s body which must have resulted from intense beating. He said although autopsy examination was being carried out at the time, he wondered why the need to carry out any autopsy after seeing the glaring signs of brutality. Twelve persons, he said, were allowed to enter the mortuary.
