Oshiomhole, APC chairman The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Adams Oshiomhole says the party is going to court to challenge the issuing of Certificate of Return to Douye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for having won the Bayelsa governorship election. The Supreme Court had nullified the election of the APC governor-elect, David Lyon and declared Diri winner of the poll. In line with this, INEC on Friday declared Diri winner of the poll, having polled overwhelming majority of votes. Oshiomhole, at a news conference in Abuja said the APC would explore every available legal means to ensure that the will of the people of Bayelsa State was upheld. Diri sworn in as Governor of Bayelsa State Senator Douye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, was on Friday sworn in as the 5th democratically elected Governor of Bayelsa State. The governor was sworn in after the Supreme Court nullified the election of David Lyon of the APC. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in compliance with the Supreme Court’s judgment declared Diri winner of the poll and issued him with Certificate of Return. Police embarrassed by autopsy report of late Chima

As Nigerians await the joint autopsy report from police pathologist and the pathologist hired by the late Chima Ikwunado’s family, the Rivers State Police Command has expressed shock and embarrassment that the earlier report indicating that the deceased died of high blood sugar was based on faked autopsy report. The Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni ,told Journalists that he issued the statement after interrogating SP Benson Adetuyi who was in charge of E-Crack unit. Senator Douye Diri: Does not meet constitutional requirement to become governor of Bayelsa THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is meeting today after receiving on Thursday night the enrolled order of the Supreme Court judgment on the Bayelsa State governorship election. The judgment nullified the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate David Lyon. The electoral agency will determine the next candidate who scored the majority of the lawful votes and the candidate with the requisite spread. But the electoral body faces a quandary of a problem as the runner-up candidate in the election, Senator Duoye Diri of the PDP fell short of what the constitution stipulates. Any candidate to win the governorship election must have a majority vote and also win a minimum of 25 per cent in two thirds of the states. Abiodun asks Senate to declare state of emergency on federal roads

The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has called on the Nigerian Senate, to declare a state of emergency on Federal roads within the state. Prince Dapo Abiodun made the call when he received the Senate Committee on Works in his office. Abiodun noted that it was pertinent that a state of emergency be declared on federal roads in the state because of their terribly poor state. According to him, all federal roads in the state are impeding economic activities in the corridor that passes through the state, which is the Nation’s Gateway State. “I want to call on you to help us declare an emergency on the state of our Federal roads. What Rwanda’s Chief Justice says on corruption

Rwanda’s Chief Justice Faustin Ntezilyayo on Thursday said there was need for concrete actions to plug loopholes in the fight against corruption in the country’s justice sector. Poor service delivery to service seekers opens up loopholes for corruption, and fighting it requires closing all those loopholes, Ntezilyayo told a meeting on anti-corruption in Kigali, capital of Rwanda. He also said assessment to determine whether the measures taken to fight corruption were bearing results was necessary. Rwanda has put in place various measures to fight corruption in its justice sector, including implementing the Integrated Electronic Case Management System, setting up anti-corruption committees, launching annual anti-corruption week, working with other government entities dedicated to fighting corruption, planning awareness campaigns, encouraging residents to report corrupt judicial officials as well as avoiding unnecessary postponement of hearings or passing of verdicts. Outgoing Governor of Bayelsa State, Henry Seriake Dickson has said the Supreme Court judgment which knocked out APC and returned gubernatorial victory to his party, the People’s Democratic Party was a clear evidence of the restoration government finishing well and strong. He made the remark Thursday at a live media chat held in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, saying he had confidence on Governor elect Senator Douye Diri to do his best and out-perform him in virtually all sectors adding that he had done a lot of work. U.S. jobless claims rise to 205,000

A report released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on Thursday revealed that the number of initial jobless claims in the United States had risen to 205,000. According to the report, the number of people filing for U.S. unemployment benefits increased by 2,000 to 205,000 from the previous week’s revised figure in the week ending February 8. Meanwhile, the previous week’s level was revised up by 1,000 from 202,000 to 203,000, the bureau noted. The report also showed that the four-week moving average of initial claims, a method to iron out data volatility, remained flat at 212,000. The previous week’s average was revised up by 250 from 211,750 to 212,000, said the bureau. As an important leading indicator to reflect unemployment status in the United States, a lower reading in jobless claims indicates lower overall layoffs. Man shot dead in Washington D.C

Washington D.C. on Thursday recorded a death when a man whose name was yet to be ascertained got shot multiple times. The shooting took place in the evening in downtown Washington D.C. and, authorities said a suspect has been taken into custody. The suspect shot the man just after 5 p.m. eastern time (2200 GMT) near the Chinatown area and the National Portrait Gallery, said D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham at a news conference Thursday night. The victim was said to have died later in a hospital. No officers were injured, and the suspect has injuries that are not life-threatening. “(A) shooting in this area is very unusual; this is a very, very safe part of town. This was what appears to be a very brazen act by a violent offender. “Thankfully, our police officers were close enough to ensure that this person was quickly taken into custody”, Xinhua quoted Newsham, adding that investigation was underway.
