APC House Of Assembly Candidate Abducted By Gunmen, Orderly Killed

Update:: Unknown gunmen on Thursday abducted the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Edo House of Assembly, Mr Michael Ohio-Ezomon, in his house at Eme-Ora, Owan West Local Government Area of the state. The Chairman of the local government, Mr Frank Illaboya who confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Eme-Ora on Thursday, said Ohio-Ezomon was abducted by three gunmen around 1 a.m. on Thursday. According to Illaboya, the candidate’s orderly was killed by the abductors who whisked him away through the window. “Our candidate in the forthcoming election has been abducted by three gunmen at his house at about 1 a.m. this morning. “The orderly attached to him was killed and our candidate was taken away by gunmen through the window. “As I speak to you now, there has been no contact from the abductors,” Illaboya said. ALERT: Worry As Lassa Fever Is Declared Endemic In Nigeria By NCDC

Update:: Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, yesterday, declared an outbreak of Lassa fever in the country, following an upsurge in the number of confirmed cases recorded across states since January 1. Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, Director-General of NCDC, announced this in Abuja. He said: “There has been an increase in the number of Lassa fever cases reported from several states across the country since the beginning of the year. “As at January 13, 60 confirmed cases have been reported in eight states. “Given this increase in reported cases, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, has declared this an outbreak.” He also said an Emergency Operations Centre, EOC, has been activated to coordinate the nationwide response to the outbreak, noting that the EOC includes World Health Organisation, WHO; mini-stries of Agriculture and Rural Development, Environment, US Centres for Disease Control, among others.

JUST IN: Egyptian TV Host Jailed For Interviewing Gay Man

Update:: An Egyptian court has sentenced a TV journalist to 12 months' jail time for allegedly "promoting homosexuality" after he interviewed a gay man. Mohammed al-Gheiti was also accused of "contempt of religion" after inviting the guest onto his show, according to Egypt's state-run Al-Ahram website. Al-Gheiti also received a fine of 3,000 Egyptian pounds ($167) and will be placed under surveillance for one year after finishing his prison time, according to Al-Ahram. The verdict, handed down by the misdemeanors court in Giza, can be appealed. The sentence can be suspended pending the outcome of the appeal if al-Gheiti pays 1,000 Egyptian pounds ($56) in bail, lawyer Samir Sabri, who filed legal papers against the TV host, told AFP. Zimbabwe troops 'used systematic torture'

Update:: A government-appointed human rights group in Zimbabwe has accused soldiers of using "systematic torture" in a crackdown on protests. The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission strongly criticised authorities for using troops to quell demonstrations. Unrest broke out more than a week ago following a sharp rise in fuel prices. Reports have emerged of assaults allegedly carried out by the military in various parts of the capital, Harare.

MTN has paid $53 mln to settle Nigeria dispute -central bank

Update:: South Africa’s MTN has paid $53 million to settle a money transfer dispute with Nigeria’s central bank and the matter has been withdrawn from court, Governor Godwin Emefiele said on Tuesday. The central bank had ordered MTN and its lenders to bring back a total of $8.1 billion it alleged the company had illegally repatriated using improperly issued paperwork between 2007 and 2008. Emefiele said the money paid by MTN was a notional sum and that the company has been absolved from any wrongdoing, he said duing a monetary policy meeting at which the bank left interest rates on hold at 14 percent.

China Waives A Year's Worth of Cameroon Debt

Update:: China says it has written off almost $78m (£60m) from Cameroon’s debt as part of measures to ease economic hardship in the central African nation, but analysts say it is a play for greater access to resources. The debt relief announcement was made on Friday shortly after a meeting between President Paul Biya and Yang Jiechi, a special representative of China's President Xi Jinping. Cameroon’s total debt burden to China stands at almost $5.7bn (£4.4bn), according to figures from the Autonomous Sinking Fund, the public entity that manages Cameroon’s external debt. The sum of $78m that has been wiped is money that should have been paid in 2018, but which Cameroon failed to pay.

Kenya attack: 'Selfless six' mourned in Nairobi after siege

Update:: A memorial service has been held in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, for some of those killed during an attack by Islamist militants in a hotel and office complex a week ago. Hundreds of mourners gathered to pay tribute to six men who were all employed by the same technology firm, Cellulant. The company has praised their selflessness and bravery. Somalia-based Islamist group al-Shabab said it carried out the attack.

Nigeria finds 20,000 kidnapped girls in Mali

Update:: A Nigerian agency fighting against people trafficking says its fact-finding team has found at least 20,000 girls stranded in Mali. "We received reports concerning the stranded girls and sent a team to find out", Julie Okah-Donli, the Director General of The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (Naptip) told Ms Okah-Donli said that some of the girls had been tricked into going by traffickers who told them they were being taken to Malaysia for work. Other girls had been kidnapped on their way to or from school. She said that the agency was working with the Nigerian authorities, Mali's government, and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to repatriate the girls.

'We Will Not Accept Political Advertisements From Outside Nigeria' – Facebook

Update:: In a bid to prevent foreign interference, Facebook has disclosed that it won’t be accepting political advertisements from outside Nigeria. Though Facebook ads are an integral part of the social media campaign for candidates and parties, Facebook said it is rolling out new rules to prevent “foreign interference” around the polls.  Following this new move  which came after Cambridge Analytica obtained the personal data of as many as 87 million users ahead of the 2016 US elections, political ad buyers in countries affected by the new rule must confirm their identity and location and their ads will be archived in an online library for seven years. The new policy also takes effect in Ukraine, where presidential elections will be held in March. In India, where general elections will be held in April, Facebook said it will begin to archive electoral ads in an online library starting February.

Update:: Resident doctors at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital ( LASUTH ), Ikeja, say they will begin three days warning strike on Jan. 28 over shortage of house officers and resident doctors. Dr Fatai Balogun, President, Association of Resident Doctors (ARD-LASUTH), said at a news conference on Tuesday in Lagos that the strike would be total. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the association had in September 2018 went on an indefinite strike to demand for the replacement of the exited house officers and resident doctors in LASUTH. Balogun said that the strike was suspended based on the promises by the management to replace the exited officers and the affirmation of the approval by the state government.
