Nnamdi Kanu: Armed security operatives takeover South-East

Ahead of the burial of Israel Okwu Kanu and his wife, Ugoeze Meme Sally, parents of the leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, security operatives have virtually taken over the Anambra, Imo and Abia axis of the South-Eastern region of the country. The burial is holding on Friday at lsiama Afaraukwu, Umuahia North Local Government area of Abia State. IPOB and security agencies have been trading words over the burial ceremony. Abia State police authorities had threatened to disrupt the burial, should members of the IPOB show up there, perhaps to forestall possible breakdown of law and order. Kano-Abuja highway to become six lanes

FEC approves engineering design for six-lane Abuja-Kano highway The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday in Abuja approved N867.2 million for engineering design of an additional lane on the Kano – Abuja highway, to make it six-lanes. The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, made this known when he briefed State House correspondents on the outcome of the weekly cabinet meeting presided over by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo. He said: “The Ministry of Works and Housing presented a memorandum to appoint a consultant for the engineering design of the additional lane for the Abuja-Kano highway for the sum of N867.263 million. “The Council approved that memo for the work to be executed in five months. “Abuja-Kano is already under construction, it was awarded in December 2017 but we now reviewed that project, giving that the road was built in the early 90s and the traffic that has grown there now so as we are doing the construction we might expand the carriage...

Police ban use of sirens, covered number plates in Rivers

The Rivers Police Command has banned the use of sirens, revolving lights, spy and covered number plates in the state. A statement signed by the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, said the Commissioner of Police, Mustapha Dandaura, banned the aforementioned facilities due to the directive of the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, on the abuse and indiscriminate use without appropriate approvals. The statement said the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State command, appealed to the residents of the state, particularly banks, companies, private individuals and security personnel except those on covert operations to show understanding by complying with the directive and immediately remove the unauthorized and prohibited facilities or face prosecution. Pandemonium as RRS headquarters gutted by fire

There was pandemonium on Wednesday as headquarters of the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, at the Lagos State Government Secretariat, Alausa, in Ikeja, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria was gutted by fire. The fire started around 11:40am, as smokes emanated from the roof of the one story building. Police officers with their guns ran out of the building as attempts were made to quench the fire to no avail. Several fire extinguishers were deployed to put out the fire, but it was after officers of the Lagos State Fire Service came that the fire was extinguished. However, not much damage was done to the building. The fire was said to have begun as a result of electrical surge in the building, leading to pandemonium as officers scampered to safety.

Coronavirus death toll hits 1,016

Death toll from the novel coronavirus outbreak in China hit 1,016 on Tuesday, according to figures released by the country’s health authorities. China’s National Health Commission reported that 103 of the 108 new deaths occurred in the central province of Hubei where the outbreak first began. In the provincial capital Wuhan, the epicentre of the crisis, the mortality rate stands at over four percent, official statistics reported. According to NAN, within the same 24-hour period, 2,478 new infections were confirmed nationwide, bringing the total tally up to 37,626. In Hubei province alone the number of confirmed cases is said to have reached over 30,000.

Family identifies late Chima’s body amid tears

There were tears and cries at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) mortuary, on Monday when members of family of the late Chima Ikwunado’s identified the body of their son. Enefaa Georgewill, Chairman Civil Societies Organisation in Rivers State who was among the team that identified the late Chima’s corpse spoke to a Port Harcourt based Radio station saying that the family and Civil Society Organisations were wondering why there should be any need for autopsy as, according to him, there were marks on the deceased’s body which must have resulted from intense beating. He said although autopsy examination was being carried out at the time, he wondered why the need to carry out any autopsy after seeing the glaring signs of brutality. SERAP drags Buhari, Ayade to ECOWAS Court over Agba Jalingo

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has dragged the Federal Government of Nigeria and Cross River State Government to ECOWAS Court of Justice in Abuja over what it termed “the prolonged, arbitrary detention, unfair prosecution, persecution, and sham trial of journalist Agba Jalingo.” SERAP said Jalingo, who is the publisher of CrossRiverWatch, was arrested on August 22 over a report alleging that Mr Ayade diverted N500 million belonging to the state. Coronavirus death toll reaches 811

The number of deaths from the new coronavirus has risen to 811 in mainland China, the country’s National Health Commission said on Sunday. The death toll thereby surpassed that of SARS, a respiratory disease which caused a global health scare in the early 2000, and which also began in China. Across China, 89 new deaths and 2,656 new confirmed cases were reported, the vast majority in the province of Hubei. According to the commission’s figures, health authorities recorded a total of 33,738 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus since the beginning of the outbreak in December. The outbreak’s epicentre is located in the city of Wuhan in Hubei province. There, the number of new cases of pneumonia caused by the virus rose by 2,147, the provincial health commission said. Also 81 new deaths were reported over the last 24 hours in Hubei, bringing the total to 780. Soldier who went on deadly rampage shot dead

A soldier who went on a deadly rampage in Thailand, killing more than 20 people and injuring dozens of others, has been shot dead by security forces, police confirmed “It’s over now,” Police Chief Chakthip Chaijinda told reporters in Nakhon Ratchasima, north-east of the capital Bangkok early Sunday. The shooter was shot dead in a mall where he had holed up, police spokesman Krissana Pattanacharoen also confirmed in a statement. The shooter was identified as 32-year-old Sergeant Jakrapanth Thomma. He reportedly shot dead his commanding officer before stealing heavy weapons and a military Humvee from a military base and going on a killing frenzy. Men of Ogun State Police Command have arrested a 50-year-old man, Kayode Oladehinde , a resident of Olope Street Ogijo for defiling his 13-year-old stepdaughter. The suspect was arrested following a report from the mother of the victim who complained at Ogijo Divisional headquarters that her daughter informed her that the suspect who is her present husband forcefully had carnal knowledge of her as a result of which she got pregnant. The mother stated further that the suspect, having realized that the victim was pregnant, gave her drug to abort the pregnancy resulting to her bleeding seriously.
