Chaos at PDP rally as angry mob reportedly attacks police officers

Violence reportedly marred a rally organised by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Jigawa state on Thursday, January 17, after a mob allegedly attacked police officers over the death of a party member.
Premium Times reports that thousands of PDP supporters, including a former Jigawa state governor, Sule Lamido, were at the rally which held in Gwaram local government area of the state.
However, violence at the rally reportedly erupted after a police officer who was said to be trying to control the crowd shot one of the participants who reportedly died.
Angered by the death of the individual, a mob reportedly began to riot and attacked police officers at the rally, burning down a police vehicle.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Zaria local government area of Kaduna state, Alhaji Abdu Ringo, has said President Muhammadu Buhari’s integrity will earn him second term in office.
He said this on Thursday, January 17, during the presentation of certificates to contractors awarded infrastructure projects in Kufena ward of Zaria local government area of the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that community leaders in each unit were mobilised by the council to monitor the execution of the projects to ensure compliance to set standards.

Update:: The 2018 ranking on terrorism is out and Nigeria, for the fourth consecutive year, occupies the third position among the countries worst hit by terrorism, globally, because of the activities of Boko Haram and herdsmen. Apart from 2014 when it was ranked fourth, Nigeria has remained in the unenviable third position in the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) ranking since 2015. In the latest report released on Wednesday, Iraq, a country in the Middle-East, is ranked first, a position it has held since 2014. Afghanistan has ranked second since 2013. Syria and Pakistan are ranked fourth and fifth respectively. Others among the top 10 countries worst hit by terrorism in 2017 are Somalia (sixth), India (seventh), Yemen (eighth), Egypt (ninth), and Philippines (10th). Update:: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says Nigeria and Federation of Russia have signed a treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters. The Ministry’s Spokesperson George Edokpa said this in a statement made available to newsmen on Monday in Abuja. The ministry explained that the Treaty was negotiated in 2009 to enhance collaboration and cooperation between the two countries in the administration of criminal justice and signed in Moscow, Russia on Nov. 27, 2018. ”The Treaty was signed on behalf of Nigeria by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, while Russian Acting Minister of Justice, Mr Oleg Plokhoy, signed on behalf of his country. ”The Treaty on Legal Assistance in Criminal Matter is aimed at providing the necessary mechanism for cooperation in the fight against crime and criminal related matters. ”These include terrorism, as well as to counter every form of support to terrorism,” it stated.
