A group of protesters, led by former presidential aide and pastor, Mr. Reno Omokri, laid siege to the Nigerian High Commission in London on Tuesday, February 19, to commemorate the first year of the incarceration by Boko Haram of Dapchi School girl, Leah Sharibu.
The organisers say the protest was to remind the world of the failure of the federal government to secure Leah's release despite promises to do so.
The London protesters called Leah’s mother, Rubeccah, and empathised with her, telling her that they stood with her in her low moments.
The protest organised by Christian Support Worldwide (CSW) began in the early hours of the day, with the group’s founder and chief executive, Mr. Mervyn Thomas, saying they would keep vigil at the commission’s premises.
Omokri told the protesters that it was sad that one whole year after the schoolgirl was abducted the federal government had been unable to secure her release.
Meanwhile, a human rights activist, Ikeazor Akaraiwe, has written an open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari over the continued incarceration of Leah and others in Boko Haram captivity.
Akaraiwe pleaded with President Buhari not to allow the lone Christian captive to further remain in captivity.
“Mr. President, you swore to uphold our constitution. Mr. President, give a 100 men in exchange for her life if need be but do not allow her remain in captivity. And if she is dead, do let us know, so we may mourn her,” he said.
