The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, has, Tuesday, suspended the over two-months old strike it embarked upon since last year’s December 12 over the failure of the federal government to implement the agreements it reached with her in 2017. The agreement was to implement the recommendations of the 2014 NEEDS assessment which recommended the increase of funding to the polytechnics. The ASUP President, Usman Dutse, announced the suspension of the strike on Tuesday during a press briefing in Abuja. According to him, the union “resolved to suspend the industrial action on the conditions that government commits to a reviewed memorandum of Action to solidify the resolutions and ensure its full implementation, failing which the union shall resume the action at its discretion.”

Update:: President Muhammadu Buhari again on Friday rained curses on the Peoples’ Democratic Party and its leaders, saying God must punish them. The President claimed that they looted the country for 16 years and that he was on a mission to recover what he said they stole. Update:: Nigerian-American filmmaker, Chinonye Chukwu, has won herself the Sundance Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize for her movie, ‘Clemency.’ Chukwu has emerged the first Black woman to win Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize US Dramatic entry. The filmmaker has also been tipped to direct the adaptation of former Black Panther leader Elaine Brown’s memoir, ‘A Taste of Power’. Deadline reports that Chukwu will work with Alyssa Hill who will adapt the screenplay from the memoir, ‘A Taste of Power: a Black Woman’s Story.’ Chukwu, is a Nigerian-born, Alaskan-raised screenwriter, producer and director, whose works had received several recognition, grants and awards. Update:: The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, said claims made on Monday by the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, that the country's power generation has improved by 100%, is fraudulent. While Fashola claimed that that there has been a 100% rise from 4000 megawatts in 2015 to 8000 megawatts in 2018, TCN, in its latest report, said the highest peak figure of power ever generated is 5,222 megawatts. Both the minister and the Transmission Company gave their statistics on Monday in Abuja, with Fashola insisting, during the visit of the Federation of Construction Industry to his office, that Nigerians now spent less on fuelling of generators and plants because of frequent and improved electricity supply nationwide. The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Tuesday did a referendum to decide whether to suspend its three-month strike or not. The national leaders of the union on Monday directed its zonal coordinators to meet and conduct a referendum. Over 200 members of the University of Ibadan chapter, who attended the congress allegedly voted for the continuation of the strike while a little above 50 voted for the suspension of the strike.

Update:: The federal government is set to finally ban the importation of tomato paste before the end of 2019, the minister of agriculture and natural resources, Audu Ogbeh, has said. Mr. Ogbeh disclosed this during a tour of the Dangote Tomato Processing Plant in Kadawa, Kano State. Update:: Two teenagers have received the flogging of their lives in Indonesia’s Aceh province. The teenagers were whipped 17 times each after spending months in jail because they were caught hugging. A female university student and her boyfriend, both 18, were handed the sentence under strict Sharia law in the province, which forbids intimate displays in public.   The pair were marched on to a stage in front of a mosque in the provincial capital of Banda Aceh before being struck across the back with a bamboo cane.   Afterward, Banda Aceh deputy mayor Zainal Arifin said: ‘People outside of Aceh who think Islamic Sharia is cruel can now see that it is actually very tolerant and humane.’   Hundreds of spectators gathered to watch the punishment being carried out.   See more photos below:

Update:: A Federal High Court, sitting in Jalingo Taraba State, has discharged and acquitted Sani Abubakar Danladi, former acting Governor and governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Taraba State, of alleged fraud. Also acquitted are Joel Ikenya, a former Minister of Labour and Productivity, and Mark Bako Useni, former Speaker of Taraba State House of Assembly. The court also gave the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) a 72-hour ultimatum to refund the sum of N228million to the defendants. The EFCC had filed the case against the trio on alleged fraud involving N450million. Justice Stephen Pam ruled that the case by the EFCC lacked merit and ordered the anti-graft agency to refund N228million, which was earlier remitted to the commission by the defendants. The judge maintained that the EFCC could not substantiate its evidence against the defendants, and urged the commission to desist from infringing on the rights of innocent citizens...

Update:: In what has become a mainstay in Nigeria today, notorious operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) shot an unarmed guy in Benin, Edo State this morning, Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019, at the point where he was being arrested. As was seen in a video which is currently trending online, the guy which was shot died instantly. The video shows that he was not the only one being arrested as four other persons were seen lying on the floor.
